I have a Millard Fillmore commemorative coin?
I'm not sure what it's made of, it looks like it could be gold plated but I'm not sure, it's kind of dull. On the front there is a picture of Millard Fillmore and it says at the top "Millard Fillmore", and at the bottom it says "1850 13th president of the united states 1853". On the back there is no picture, but it says "Millard Fillmore Born Jan. 7, 1800. Grew up in a log cabin; Last pres. of Whig party; opened trade with Japan, Installed first library in the white house. Died Mar. 8, 1874." Does anyone know where this coin came from? I looked through all the commemorative coins in the US mint and it doesn't say that there has ever been a Millard Filmore coin that was produced (or if it did I just didn't find it). I know they are supposed to release a similar version in 2010, but I've had this coin for a long time and don't know how I got it, it might have come from a relative.
It is not a coin but a private mint medal. There are a lot of different types and many have been made over the years especially from 1960-1990. They were made as gas station give-a-ways to being sold in sets. Most are made of brass,copper or bronze and some are silver colored and are made of copper/nickel. Presidential private mint medals go back to George Washington and some of his were made while he was still alive and he was not happy about it. Most however are all modern made, are 1/2 dollar to the old silver dollar size, not real heavy. There are no books out on them so know one knows who made them unless it is on the medal some place. They sell for around $1 for the gold colored brass or bronze to around $20 for the real silver once. Your chance of finding out about the one you have is slim unless it has a company name or a designers name on it. Best I can do.
