Samuel Gardner by Edgar Lee Masters?
I have to write a journal about Edgar Lee Masters' poem Samuel Gardner from the book Spoon River Anthology. And it makes no sense to me. I need help?
You don't need to understand a poem to write a journal entry. If you have not read the poem out loud, do that first. Then start with what you don't understand and fiddle around with questions. The only hard vocabulary is the aeolian whispers - an aeolian harp is a kind of wind chime - think of the sound wind makes as it blows through trees. It will help to remember that old Sam, like all the other speakers in Spoon River, is "an under tenant of the earth" that is, in his grave. So write out what you get from the lines, and think about the speaker's last question where he compares his life to the life of the elm tree he loved.
